Caryl Casden

Deputy City Attorney / Labor & Employment Division

Caryl Casden joined the Oakland City Attorney’s Office in 2006.  As a member of the Labor & Employment Division, Ms. Casden advises clients on a wide range of labor and employment matters, including wage and hour law, labor relations, employee discipline and workplace investigations, the Fair Employment and Housing Act, the California Public Records Act and personnel-related professional service agreements.  She also has represented the City in numerous arbitration and other hearings. 

Before joining the Office, Ms. Casden served as an Assistant Counsel in the General Counsel’s Office of the National Treasury Employees Union, where she litigated cases involving federal labor, administrative and constitutional issues.  Ms. Casden began her legal career as a trial attorney with the U.S. Department of Labor, Office of the Solicitor, conducting trial level litigation in cases arising under the Mine Safety and Health Act, the Fair Labor Standards Act and related laws.

Ms. Casden earned her undergraduate degree from Mount Holyoke College and her law degree from the American University, Washington College of Law.
